Reading
Reading for Pleasure and Choice
Reading for Pleasure and choice is an essential part of a child’s education; having the time to engross themselves into a book that they have chosen is unique, because it frees the students from the expectations of the curriculum, and allows them to pursue their interests. Students are encouraged to read for pleasure, because we believe that it fosters empathy and emotional intelligence, positive mental well-being, creativity, imagination, and self-identity. It also allows for escapism, enjoyment, relaxation, and the ability to experience new cultures, ideas and worlds.
Students are able to freely borrow books from our central area to give them the opportunity to discover their passions through the medium of reading for pleasure and choice.
Structured Reading
All students participate in a group reading activity every week. Students have the opportunity to explore text, themes and characters. These sessions equip students with the tools they need to thrive in academic, professional and personal endeavours.
Targeted Reading Intervention
Individual students receive additional reading support through the 'That Reading Thing' programme.
The Triple Crown Free Library
Our school Free Library Stand in the foyer is located in the school reception area. This initiative encourages a love of reading and provides students and visitors with the opportunity to borrow and enjoy books freely, without the need for formal sign-out.
Once a book has been read, it can simply be returned or exchanged for another, ensuring that stories continue to circulate and inspire our school community. The Book Stand aims to promote a culture of sharing, curiosity, and lifelong enjoyment of reading.
