Mathematics

Intent

At our school, we believe that success in Maths is achievable for every child, regardless of their individual starting points. We have high expectations for all students, ensuring they not only enjoy the subject but also make strong progress along their individual pathways. Through a well-sequenced curriculum, students build new skills that connect meaningfully with prior learning, developing their knowledge and understanding over time.

Our Maths curriculum is broad and balanced, covering the five key strands: number, algebra, geometry and measures, ratio and proportion, and probability and statistics. In addition, we provide students with opportunities to apply Maths beyond the classroom through STEM experiences, personal finance education, and real-life problem-solving. This helps to build cultural capital, enabling students to connect their learning to the world around them and preparing them for life beyond school.

As a department, we are committed to build student’s confidence so that they become resilient, enthusiastic and inquisitive learners. Through the development of Mathematical knowledge and the embedding of key skills required for the subject, we strive for students to gain autonomy in critical thinking, problem-solving and conceptual understanding.

We prepare all students for their post-16 pathways and equip them with the mathematical skills they need for future employment and training. Whether continuing their education or entering the workforce, students leave our school as confident mathematicians, ready to apply their numeracy, reasoning, and problem-solving abilities to real-life scenarios. Our goal is to empower every student with the mathematical competence necessary to achieve their aspirations and succeed in the modern world.
