Holocaust Memorial Day – Thursday, 27 January 2022
Date
January 27, 2022
Details
Over many years, the Council and its partners have commemorated Holocaust
Memorial Day by holding a service in Solihull.
The service has developed year on year. The aim is for this memorial day to continue in 2022 and to be held as an online event involving all Solihull’s schools and colleges.
The theme for Holocaust memorial day in 2022 is ‘One Day’. It encourages everyone
to remember to learn about the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and the genocides that
followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur, in the hope that there may be
One Day in the future with no genocide. We learn more about the past, we
empathise with others today, and we take action for a better future.
Staff and students will be joining the service online on Thursday 27 January 2022, 11:00am – 11:45am.
Sue Barnett BEM will be attending the service and will be giving a talk about her
experiences of being a refugee. After being imprisoned in Sachsenhausen
concentration camp, her father managed to reach Shanghai, China. Her mother was
left on her own in Hamburg with Susie who was just a baby. Susie owes her life to
the persistence of a cousin in London, who helped her mother to obtain a domestic
service visa from the Home Office which enabled them to escape from Nazi
Germany
